This high-stakes battle of baristas will take place on Friday 1st August at Machine Limited in Auckland and on the 7th August at Veneziano Coffee Roasters in Melbourne. 

Prepare to be captivated as talented baristas go head to head, showcasing their expertise and creativity in the art of pour over coffee. Each competitor will be using Cafec brewing gear, the same coffee and the same grinder. So, it will be purely a battle of skill and pour over technique!

We are thrilled to announce that special guest Shigeji Nakatsuka, the Founder and CEO of Cafec Japan, will be attending the event.

With a pool of incredible prizes awaiting the victorious baristas. The ultimate champion will take home the coveted title of "Cafec Brew Master" along with a limited edition Gold Tsubame Kettle! But the competition won't be easy—these talented individuals will have to impress a distinguished panel of judges, including industry experts, renowned coffee judges and esteemed members of the specialty coffee community.

Cafec Brew Masters Rules New Zealand 2025

Competitors must check in 15 minutes prior to the beginning of the competition

1. Coffee
The coffee beans used for the competition will be the official coffee sponsor for 2025 - Flight Coffee Roasters.

Each competitor will receive 200g of the competition coffee 2 weeks prior to the event to practice. The same coffee will be used on the competition day. Flight Coffee will ship coffee to each competitor 2 weeks prior to the competition.

Coffee for practice and on the night will be 1 week from roast date.

2. Equipment
All brewing gear will be provided for the competition.

Cafec Brewing Gear: Cafec Tritan 1 Cup Flower Dripper, Cafec Deep 27, Cafec Oval Dripper, Cafec Server.
Cafec Filter Paper: Choice of; Cafec Abaca, Cafec Abaca+, Cafec Roast Profile Paper
Official Scale: Acaia Scale
Official Grinder: Mahlkonig EK43 Omnia
Official Water: BWT Water
Official Cup: Sttoke Swirl Cup
Official Kettle: Brewista Kettle 

a) Only provided brewing gear can be used for the competition. No additional brewing devices permitted.
b) Water for brewing will be prepared by the organizer. No additives to the water or coffee are permitted.
d) Station will be reset after each competitor and ready for the next competitor.

3. Competition Format
The competition is a multi-round, elimination tournament.

a) In each round, three competitors brew coffee simultaneously.
b) Competitors have 10 minutes in which to prepare, brew and present their coffee.
c) When the time is up, the coffees are presented in identical vessels to a panel of three judges.
d) The judges blindly evaluate each coffee and make their own private assessment as to which is the best.
e) On the count of three, all judges simultaneously point to their preferred coffee.
f) The winner progresses to the next round. The losers are eliminated.
g) Bypass brew is not allowed.

4. Judging
There will be 1 flight of 3 judges and 1 head judge.

The winner is determined by pointing at the cup. If a decision cannot be made, the head judge will decide the winner.

a) Each round is judged blind using the cupping technique.
b) Competitors' names will be marked on the bottom of the cups where they are completely hidden.
c) There is no scoresheet or formal judging criteria. Judges are simply answering: “Which cup would I prefer to drink all of?"
d) Each judge will arrive at their own conclusion, without discussing the samples with their fellow judges.
e) On the count of three, all judges will point simultaneously at the cup of their choosing.
f) After judging, the MC will lift the winning cup, revealing the name of the round winner.
g) In the event of all three judges pointing at different cups, the Head Judge will taste the
coffees, and decide the round. This decision is final.
